What we do

Thrive Maternal Health Fund is dismantling systemic barriers to make individualized midwifery care accessible to all San Diego families & beyond. Four pillars guide our work.

01 / Accessibility Accessibility

Thrive Maternal Health Fund removes financial barriers to maternal healthcare by connecting families with individualized support during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and times of loss.

Every mother deserves access to compassionate care, regardless of income, insurance status, or circumstance.

02 / Education Education

Information changes outcomes.

The decisions families make during pregnancy, postpartum, and times of loss can have lasting effects on both parent and baby. Thrive Maternal Health Fund believes every family deserves access to trusted, evidence-informed education that empowers them to make decisions with confidence.

Our educational programs help families, providers, and community members better understand maternal health, recognize warning signs, and access support when it is needed most.

1 in 5 Mothers experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Education and early intervention can identify concerns sooner—before a crisis develops.
Better outcomes Mothers who receive prenatal breastfeeding education are more likely to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, with realistic expectations and confidence before challenges arise.

03 / Community Community

The strength of community.

No one organization can transform maternal health alone.

Real change happens when healthcare providers, families, volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners come together with a shared purpose: ensuring every mother has the support she deserves.

At Thrive Maternal Health Fund, we believe that when a community invests in mothers, entire families and future generations benefit.

Building connections that matter
  • Breastmilk Connection Program Connecting local breastmilk donors with families seeking donor milk, helping babies receive the nourishment they need while fostering a community of generosity and support.
  • Community Partnerships Working alongside hospitals, healthcare providers, nonprofits, businesses, and local organizations to expand access to maternal health resources and compassionate care.
  • Volunteer Opportunities Our volunteers are the heart of Thrive. Whether assisting at events, supporting outreach, or sharing professional expertise, every volunteer helps strengthen our mission.
  • Support Through Connection By bringing together trusted providers, community organizations, and families, we create a network of support that extends far beyond a single visit.
Our community is growing
  • Every volunteer
  • Every partner
  • Every donor
  • Every healthcare professional
“The strongest communities are built by people who choose to care for one another.”

04 / Equity Equity

Every mother deserves to see herself in her care.

At Thrive Maternal Health Fund, we proudly serve women and families of every race, culture, language, faith, and background.

Improving maternal health means acknowledging the realities many families face. Not every woman enters pregnancy with the same opportunities, experiences, or outcomes—and health equity begins by recognizing those differences and working together to change them.

3–4× Higher risk of pregnancy-related death for Black women in California than women of other racial and ethnic groups. (California Department of Public Health)
2% Of California Licensed Midwives identify as Black, while nearly three-quarters identify as White. (California Health Care Foundation)
Why this matters
  • Representation builds trust Many families feel more comfortable receiving care from someone who understands their language, culture, and lived experiences. Patient-provider cultural and racial concordance is linked to greater trust, better communication, and increased use of care.
  • A workforce that reflects its families Only 12% of California Licensed Midwives identify as Latina/x, while nearly 45% of California women of reproductive age are Latina/x. Every family should be able to find a provider they connect with and trust.
  • The Thrive BIPOC Midwifery Scholarship An investment in the future of maternal healthcare—supporting aspiring midwives from underrepresented communities so the next generation of providers better reflects the families they serve.
Investing in future midwives helps
  • Increase diversity within the midwifery profession
  • Improve culturally responsive maternity care
  • Strengthen trust between families and providers
  • Expand access to relationship-based care
  • Build a workforce that reflects its communities
“Every woman deserves exceptional care. Every woman deserves to feel seen, heard, respected, and understood.”

Why our cause matters

Safe maternal care is a right, not a privilege.

A new mother in a robe cradles her swaddled newborn while a midwife sits with her in a sunlit care room.
The preventable crisis

80%

Of maternal deaths are preventable with proper support

Every preventable loss represents a mother and family who deserved care that saw them sooner.

America has the highest maternal mortality rate among industrialized nations — despite spending the most on maternity care. Community midwifery is a proven solution: when midwives are integrated into the health system, outcomes improve dramatically.

Midwifery care should not be reserved for a privileged few. It should be an option for every woman, in every setting — as part of a just and humane healthcare system.
